Hat Sizing Systems Explained

US Sizing

Uses fractional numbers from 6 3/4 to 8 1/8. The most common system in North America. Each size increment corresponds to approximately 1 cm in head circumference.

UK Sizing

Also uses fractional numbers but offset by 1/8 from US sizes. Used in the United Kingdom, Australia, and other Commonwealth countries.

EU Sizing

Based directly on head circumference in centimeters, making it the simplest system. Used across continental Europe. Sizes range from 54 to 65.

Hat Sizing Tips

Measure around your forehead. Place the tape measure about 1 cm above your ears and across the middle of your forehead where you want the hat to sit.

Consider your hairstyle. If you have thick or voluminous hair, it can add up to a full size. Measure with your hair styled as you would normally wear it under a hat.

When between sizes, go up. A slightly loose hat is more comfortable and can be adjusted with sizing tape. A too-tight hat causes headaches.

4.

Hat fit varies by style. Fitted caps, fedoras, and beanies all sit differently on the head. Try on multiple styles to find what works best for your head shape.

5.

Hats can stretch or shrink. Felt and wool hats may shrink with moisture. Straw hats can stretch with wear. Account for this when choosing your size.
